Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream - Pink Saturday
From the kitchen of One Perfect Bite...I have a fondness for good ice cream that was acquired late in life. It was not something I had regularly as a child. It had nothing to do with money. The freezer compartments of old refrigerators were small cubical affairs designed to make ice cubes and hold very little else. Options for ice cream lovers were limited. A very few had ice cream freezers and could make their own. Most families, however, would send their fastest runner to the deli to pick up a pint that was brought home to be sliced and shared by all. Half gallons of ice cream weren't generally available until the 1950's when larger refrigerators made their storage possible. Among the group who relied on runners, Neapolitan was, by far, the most popular flavor because of its three cream appeal. Some of us were even more fortunate and could count on the Good Humor man to supplement the deli runs. He came through our neighborhood three times a week and, urchins that we were, a neighborhood watch was formed to spot him and spread the word he was on his way. Only Santa Claus was treated with more reverence and affection than the Good Humor man. Allowances rarely covered the cost of ice cream, but Popsicles were only a dime and you could tell who had what flavor by the color of the mustache around their lips. I know that in later years he became persona non grata, but for those of us who stood ready at the curb with pennies in our hands, his chimes were a symphony. As the ice cream man fades into history so, too, does Gourmet magazine. This lovely recipe is a reminder of why so many of us regret its passing. Here's how Gourmet's strawberry cheesecake ice cream is made.
Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream...from the kitchen of One Perfect Bite, courtesy of Gourmet magazine
Ingredients:
1 pint (12-oz.) strawberries, hulled and coarsely chopped
1 package (8-oz.) cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup heavy cream
Directions:
1) Combine strawberries, cream cheese, sugar, milk, lemon juice and salt in a blender jar. Puree just until smooth. Transfer to a bowl and stir in cream. Chill until very cold.
2) Freeze mixture in ice cream maker. Transfer to an airtight container and freeze to harden. Yield: 1 quart.

This was always one of my favorite flavors! I've given up ice cream, but everyone I know will appreciate this easy recipe. Thanks for sharing it. Happy Weekend!
ReplyDeleteWhat a trip down memory lane. I flew out of the house at the first chime of the ice cream man. I will admit my fav wasn't ice cream, it was the red, white and blue rocket popsicle. 3 flavors for one price. Yum! I'm your newest follower, thanks for the fun Pink Saturday blog.

Besides caramel, this is the top favourite of my husband. It looks so smooth and creamy!
ReplyDeleteHi Mary Sweetie...
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful Pink Saturday share today. Oh my what memories you have found that I had forgotten. Neopolitan is stil one of my favorite.
We had a family that we were best friends with growing up. We spent many weekends at each others homes. Us kids loved it when we made ice cream, we would take turns sitting on the top while one of us others would take turns cranking the handle. Oh what fun that was. The ice cream was the best with chocolate syrup on top. Oh yummy.
I love this recipe that you have shared today. I do not have an ice cream maker, but you know what? I think it is time we invested in one. We have 8 grandchildren who I know would love home made ice cream. I want to start some traditions of my own.
Oh thank you for sharing with me today. I am trying to get back up and moving again. This asthma and my lungs have kept me down for 2 1/2 months, and the doctor today said they will not release me now until July 19th. I have to spend the next 10 days with no voice. I cannot talk. I am very hoarse, and when they went down in my throat with the camera and looked around they said my vocal cords are extremely strained from all of the coughing. Looks like I am still not going to be free. I must learn to be patient.
Hope you are doing well. I have thought so much about my blogging friends of late. I am truly trying to get back up again. I thank you for your prayers while I have been ill. I could not have made it without them.
Country hugs sweetie...Sherry

ReplyDeleteFantastic post... Great story and the recipe and photos are inspirational...
ReplyDeleteWe had the high school kid that rode a three wheel bike through the neighborhoods. Dry ice was used to keep the ice cream cold. i remember when he opened the lid and the "steam" from the ice came out. Heaven on a summer day.
Now that kid was a god to us.
oh my gosh, that has to be the best flavor ever!
ReplyDeleteI am an ice cream lover too.Especillay strawberry; your photo is Perfect. You are so right; in those days ice cream was a rare treat. Never had an ice cream man in our corner of the world when I was growing up.
ReplyDeleteRita
As always I just adore your posts! I can ust see "the runner" flying home with precious cargo -
ReplyDeleteFor some reason growing up I never seemed to live in a neighborhood frequented by the ice cream truck. But it came to my grandparents. My grandfather always had a dime ready ;) What fun summer memories.
I had no idea gourmet magazine was on its way out. What a shame!
Happy Pink Saturday!
CailinMarie
I can't imagine growing up without ice cream always in the fridge...my ultimate temptation. The strawberry cheesecake flavor sounds delicious!gan
ReplyDeleteMary - What beautiful ice cream!! Ice cream was a staple from my childhood and neopolitan was always in the frig!
ReplyDeleteMary...you brought back memories for me concerning Neapolitan variety ice cream. Yes, we also had that plus the pesky dried pieces of fruit inside (Italian style)...I honestly didn't fancy it. However, my Hubby one day brought out 2 spoons and a bucket of Neapolitan and that was a huge part of our 3rd date...LOL.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this recipe...and yes I too am sad to have seen Gourmet Magazine say goodbye.
Have a great weekend,
Claudia
Oh STOP! This is looks and sounds too good. Oh my goodness, too good.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was growing up (late 60's/early 70's), we called the ice cream man "The Goody Bar Man." We loved when he would appear on our street. If we missed him by the time we came out of the house with our money, we might run up to the street behind us so we could catch him on the way around the block.
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing the ice cream recipe. While I don't eat MUCH ice cream, the rest of my family does. And they love homemade!
Happy pink Saturday to you,
Patti (Fill My Cup with Beauty)
Love your originality for coloring Saturday! And pink is so becoming...yes, sometimes we develop tastes for stuff that did not impress us much during our childhood years- of course you made such nice alterations! ...and thanks so much for loyally coming and posting at my blog- I really appreciate it since there aren't a lot of folks doing it (which is fine with me)-, but does feel nice nevertheless, when someone as busy as you still has time to drop a few words of encouragement!
ReplyDeleteYou know what this is lacking? Some biscuit bits! yum yum!
ReplyDeleteMary, thank you for all the wonderful glimpses into your childhood. The color of the ice cream is wonderful. What a cool treat to have on a hot afternoon.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, the best kind of ice cream ever!! Yours is probably the best in the world!=)

Pretty and yummy...what could be better?
ReplyDeleteI just made strawberry cheesecake ice cream too...though mine did not look as lovely as yours. Talk about a wonderfully sinful dessert!
ReplyDeleteMy parents use to buy neapolitan ice cream all the time...if they let me dish out my own, I always went just straight for the chocolate! Thanks for the memories this morning!
I enjoyed reading this post - what great memories. We still have an ice cream truck in my neighborhood but it is not the same as it used to be with the Good Humor trucks of the past. Annoying music and cheap ice cream :(
ReplyDeleteWow! rich, creamy and delicious ice cream, that's really something sweet to share.
ReplyDeleteA splendid story (and ice cream) for those of us who still remember the Good Humor Ice Cream Truck. Part of what makes them "the good old days" ;D
ReplyDeleteYour ice cream looks wonderful pink and smooth, just how I like it :o) Wonderful post, thanks for sharing, it made me smile!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh I wish we lived closer! That looks so good!
ReplyDeleteMary, this looks heavenly! I just whipped up a batch of blueberry cheesecake ice cream yesterday, so this fits my tastes perfect!
ReplyDeleteI have such fond memories of the ice cream man from my childhood. He still comes through our neighborhood on Sundays and my boys love chasing him down for a little ice cream treat memory of their own.
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
I have never made any home made ice cream, although I do like them, provided that they are based on natural ingredients...when I was a kid, the choice was very limited. We did not have all those variations of tastes like nowadays. Strawberries, raspberries, chocolate, vanilla..and that's it. We did not store ice cream, firstly because one could not find ice cream in boxes; and the secondly - we always stored some meat (when I was a kid, meat was a luxury product because of the ever lasting food crisis). Best regards...
ReplyDeleteMary- this is exactlyt he kind of recipe I have been looking for.
ReplyDeleteDon't you wish sometimes to be able to return to those years, if not as a child, at least as an observer to just get this sweet feeling of these happy, carefree times when the only problem you were facing was whether this ice-cream person will pass or not? This beautiful ice-cream brings back a lot of memories.
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious! Cant wait to try it!
