Blue Hawaii Martini

From the kitchen of One Perfect Bite...I now know for sure that what goes around comes around. About 6 months ago I was straightening the pantry and got to the shelf where I keep liqueurs and other spirits I use for cooking. While I don't mind doubles of certain things, some of the sweet cordials last for years and having more than one bottle of them makes no sense. With that in mind, I pulled out the duplicates, gave one of our neighbors a call and invited her to take whatever she liked from the assortment that would otherwise be poured down the drain. One of the bottles that moved from our house to hers was blue curacao, an orange flavored liqueur that is tinted a glorious cobalt blue. I'm guessing about the tint, but I've never in all my years of travel seen a blue orange, so I think that's a reasonable assumption on my part. At any rate, we were invited for drinks a week or so ago and, sure enough, one of the drinks being offered was a blue martini. Now it happens that we live in an area where men would rather die of thirst than drink a Pink Lady or touch this strange new drink called the Blue Hawaii. There was a lot of circling around the drink table but no one touched the martini pitcher. We had a lovely visit but as we were getting set to leave, my neighbor pulled me into the kitchen when she gifted me with the bottle of Blue Curacao I had given her 6 months earlier. I am once again the custodian of the blue albatross which I am now convinced is the fruitcake of the 21st century. I've been told by those who enjoy the newer martinis that this is a nice drink. I think it is beautiful. By the way, if you know someone looking for a blue liqueur,  have I got a deal for you. I'm linking this post to Blue Monday, a blog event created by my friend Sally who hosts it on her blog, Smiling Sally. Here's the recipe for the Blue Hawaii Martini.

  1. Boy! This takes me back to the late 70s when I lived in Pittsburgh and frequented a lovely Polynesian restaurant with great food, atmosphere and stupendous bar. I had a drink that sounds like what you describe, but for some reason I remember it being called something to do with Elvis. Perhaps a Blue Hawaii or a Blue Suede Shoe? Can't remember - had already imbibed a couple! Thanks for the memory jog.

  4. You gave me a big smile. I'll swap you my bottle of Sabra, chocolate and orange liqueur, that was a gift, for your blue fantasy liqueur.

  11. Funny story, Mary!
I've seen this drink, but never tried it. Amazing color though. I think I better open my liquor cabinet and go through everything. My son said he found a bottle in there that was marked with a tag (must have taken it to a BYOB party) from the 60's!

  16. I actually never buy this liquor because it looks strange to me that an orange liquor could be blue... Anyway, this drink looks pretty good and I would definitly drink it!

  18. What a beautiful shade of blue, reminds me of the ocean. The ingredients to this drink sound like something I could drink in one gulp although I'm sure by the second I wouldn't even feel it. I'd definitely have to watch myself with this one, it sounds too good! It could be dangerous!

  20. Sorry, I never allow "blue" to pass my lips. Apparently my great grandmother was taking a medication that looked like blue M&Ms. We little girls were told that blue was poison and we still believe that to be true.

I will take a Pink Lady please.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  21. Too funny that you ended up with the bottle! I don't know that I've ever tried a Blue Hawaii, but it sure makes me want to be lounging on a beach...I would gladly drink one then!

  22. Oh I love blue curacao. I used to bartend years ago so I always had fun making different concoctions. I mix blue curacao, rum, sour mix and ice in a blender. It's an awesome frozen drink (think blue margarita). :)

  25. "The fruitcake of the 21st century"... I love that one!

I don't have any blue curaco at my house, but maybe I'll make one of these drinks after I have my baby in August. :)

  27. Mary, mark your calendar and be sure to gift your blue cordial back to your friend in six months! Silly people - not trying something because it is sky-blue!
