Mary, this is truly my worst nightmare! I've got a lizard phobia that used to be so intense, I couldn't even look at pictures of them without my heart rate spiking. I've done some therapy and it's gotten a little better, but if I knew there were lizards of any type in my hotel room, I'd never sleep. Ever. The thought of them crawling on me at night, while I'm asleep and vulnerable, freaks me out! As long as they stay outside, I can deal.
I also hope it helps to know that this doesn't happen everywhere in Southeast Asia. BUT ....this was for real. We've been told the geckos are more afraid of us then we of them so they'll stay on walls and ceilings. As most restaurants, once outside of Thailand, are courtyard affairs you do see the critters on walls and ceilings and they don't seem to bother anybody. In the hotels they will remove them if you report them. We never saw them in our hotel rooms.
Mary, this is funny!! It not only brought a smile to my face, but memories of living in Brazil, and the occasional gecko on the wall. You just had to wonder how long he was there before you noticed him!
Yes, in Thailand they were everywhere! When I was younger, they never seemed to bother me, but as I've gotten older, the phobia really took off. I have no idea what triggered it, but I've been to therapy to reduce it. It helped a little (I can now watch Geiko commercials without freaking out), but what I really need is intense exposure therapy. There are groups here in PDX, but most of them are for snakes or spiders, which don't bother me in the least, oddly enough. Phobias are so specific, it's interesting some of the things people are afraid of.
Anyhow, sorry to run off with the topic...and really, I'm not crazy :-)
Darlene, you didn't run away with the topic and I don't think you're crazy. I can't stand snakes. I walked thru the fish market in Kali with my arms rigid and my eyes looking straight ahead. There were eels slithering on the floor and I thought I was going to die before the tour finished. I had asked for a group detour, so I couldn't leave. Hugs from me to you because I know they (the hugs) are reciprocal. We all have something that gives us the willies.

Funny! Hope you are having fun.
They have signs like this in most of the hotels in Hawaii, not only for the gecko's but for bugs, too.
Price you pay for paradise!
