Mardi Gras Hurricane Cocktail

Working on the theory that it is better to be weeks too early than a day too late, I wanted to alert all of you who follow One Perfect Bite to changes that are in the wind. Come the 1st of March, Google will no longer support Google Friends Connect on any platform other than Blogger. This has major implications for those of you who have blogs on the WordPress, TypePad, Tumblr or Movable Type platforms. If you have been following One Perfect Bite through Google Friend Connect you will no longer receive automatic updates. That can be remedied by subscribing to my blog using RSS, Facebook, Twitter or email. You can do that by selecting from the buttons that you will find at the top of the column on the right side of the screen. You will also be able to add it to your Google homepage or reader of your choice. I have started to post each day's entry on Pinterest and I'd love to have you take a look at what we are doing there. Obviously, for those of you with blogs on the Blogger platform, nothing will change, at least for the time being. I want to thank all of you for your support and I think I've done everything I can to make this transition as seamless and trouble free as it can be for you. I hope that come the 1st of March, it will be business as usual. I'm just a click away.

Everyone knows that the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby is the Mint Julep. How about Mardi Gras? The beverage of choice in New Orleans this coming week will be the Hurricane Cocktail. I should be embarrassed to admit this, but I first sampled the Hurricane last year at a Fat Tuesday party, where it was the (only) beverage of choice. Were it not for that, I'd probably still be in the woods sipping cider through a straw. I'm not a cocktail person and, while I love wine, I don't seek out drinks that come with parasols. They are just too sweet to my taste and I usually take a pass. Actually, as sweet drinks go, this one is not too bad and lots of folks really love it. For the next few days, I'm going to be featuring foods associated with Mardi Gras and I thought this drink would be a fun place to start. I'm also including a recipe for grenadine. The Hurricane numbs you for what is to come. Here we go.

Ingredients:
4 ounces light rum
4 ounces dark rum
2 ounces grenadine, or passion fruit syrup
2 ounces fresh orange juice
2 ounces sour mix, or fresh lime juice
2 teaspoon superfine sugar
Orange wedges, for garnish

Directions:
Mix all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker, and shake to dissolve the sugar. I used a mason jar. Add ice cubes to come halfway up the sides of 4 tall glasses. Divide the mixture between the glasses. Garnish each with an orange wedge and serve with a long straw. Yield: 4 servings

Grenadine:

Ingredients:

1 quart pomegranate juice
2 cups sugar
2 dashes orange flower water

Directions:
Bring pomegranate juice and sugar to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce heat and cover, allowing it to simmer for 10-15 minutes and stirring occasionally. Allow mixture to cool, then pour into a small decanter or bottle with a tight-sealing lid. Add a dash or two of orange flower water (don't overdo it). Seal the bottle and give it a few good shakes.

Cook's Note: This grenadine should be good for up to 3 weeks and makes about 1-1/2 cups. You can also add a small amount of overproof vodka as a preservative to give it a little longer shelf life.

Well, I live in the heart of Kentucky and enjoy all the goings on of the Derby. I don't care for bourbon very much, but I do make it a tradition to have one mint julip each year. I visited N.O. in 1994 for my 10th wedding anniversary and had 2 Hurricane's and I was sick the entire time of the remainder of our trip. They are delish, but I may pass on them and have a glass of wine! LOL. I'm a light weight!!

I've heard of this drink, but never tried it. Like you, I normally eschew sweet drinks, but I guess there's something about the music and excitement of mardi gras that goes with a tall, sweet drink.

This is one of my favorite drinks, Mary! I had it for the first time in New Orleans last year and that too, at Pat O'Briens where it was created! :D Let me tell you, one Hurricane knocked me out! LOL Thanks for sharing the recipe, Mary!

I'm not too much of a cocktail drinker, but when I do have one, I like rum drinks the best. This one sounds really fresh and not too sweet, and you can't beat that color!

Little did I know there was an actual drink associated with Mardi Gras. I'd give it a go at least once out of curiosity.

Thanks for sharing, Mary...

I usually don't for sweet drinks, either. The only exception is if I'm in Hawaii, I will imbibe in a Chi-Chi. When I was in New Orleans, I had a Hurricane Cocktail at the place that is famous for them. I still recall how drunk so many of the patrons were! I enjoyed it, but sipped mine slowly. They are good! I'm happy to know how to make my own grenadine! I've been hearing about the Google changes, so I may "borrow" your announcement on my blog. I'm sure that everyone will follow you, no matter how it's done.

One of those knocked me on my rear end once, and I happened to be much younger, So guess I better stick to the glass of wine. You can also add the linky follow tool to your blog. (I put one on mine)It gives new followers a way to follow and those of us who are already followers can also follow that way. As for me, I just have your posts emailed to me every day. That way I am sure not to miss one :)

Hurricanes are deceptively strong & delightfully delicious. Let's just say you probably should not drink those 3 pictured LOL!! Pat O' actually has a group sized one that is so large it has to sit on the ground & though I can't believe it, I actually shared in the drinking of a few of those back in the day.

I love the colours in you Hurricane Cocktail! Spectacular!
I am interested in your announcement I am on blogger but I have had so much trouble in the past two weeks checking out any blogspot food blogs. Like yours it has taken me about 10 minutes to get onto it. I'm not that computer savy. Where do I find this infomation out? Is there a problem or is it my computer?

I've been so irritated with Google lately for all the changes! Gah, thanks for the heads up! This cocktail sounds fantastic! I've been having fun experimenting with them lately and can't wait to try this one.

This drink is one of the best reasons for visiting New Orleans. Pat O'Brians is a crazy place and where I sampled my first Hurricane. It was properly named too, because it can hit you before you know it.
