Starbuck's Coffee Cake
From the kitchen of One Perfect Bite...I hadn't planned to include this coffee cake in the series I'm featuring this week. I changed my mind because it proved to be very popular at several of the meetings I've attended this month. The cake is very easy to make, so I decided to share it with those of you who have not yet tried the homemade version of this famous crumb cake. I am going to request culinary clemency from those of you who do not like recipe clones or overly sweet cakes. Make no bones about it, this is one sweet cake and it may be off putting to those who prefer European-style pastries. I've made no changes to the recipe which I found at Famous Restaurant Recipes because that seems to defeat the purpose of a recipe clone. Here is their version of Starbuck's Coffee Cake.
Starbuck's Coffee Cake...from the kitchen of One Perfect Bite courtesy of Famous Restaurant Recipes
Ingredients:
Topping
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup light brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Cake
1 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs + 1 egg yolk
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup milk
Instructions:
1) Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter and flour a 9 x 13-inch pan. Set aside.
2) Make topping by combining 1 cup flour with brown sugar, a stick of softened butter and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a medium bowl. Mixture should have consistency of moist sand. Add 1/2 cup chopped pecans.
3) In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup butter, 3/4 cup light brown sugar and 1/2 cup granulated sugar with an electric mixer until smooth and fluffy. Add whole eggs, egg yolk and vanilla and mix well.
4) In a separate bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt. Add this dry mixture to moist ingredients a little bit at a time. Add milk and mix well.
5) Spoon batter into prepared baking pan.
6) Sprinkle crumb topping over batter. Be sure topping completely covers batter.
7) Bake cake for 50 minutes, or until edges just begin to turn light brown. Cool. Yield: 12 servings.

Oh my god, it looks amazing..I would love to have a slice with tea this morning!! Great recipe as always!!
My mom makes one that looks a lot like your cake, Mary. It's from LA City Schools and people can't get enough. I'm going to try yours too. It's beautiful!
That coffee cake looks very good, but it is the corn and edamame succotash (one year ago today) that has me salivating this morning!! YUM! blessings ~ tanna
My daughter has a part time job at Starbucks, and I think I've tasted just about every treat there, but never their coffee cake. Sometimes a sweet cake is just the thing.
.....and the scones from yesterday were delicious.....just a memory now!
I am having coffee this morning and would LOVE this great coffee cake. Mary you have compiled a treasury of great coffee cakes, like "the best of" coffee cake cookbook! I will work my way through them as soon as the builders put my oven back in my kitchen.
Now my only problem is what to make first...maybe this cake or maybe the sour cream cherry... or.... YUM!
Yvonne
Sweet is good sometimes Mary. It is nice to make this at home and then you don't need to limit yourslef to just one slice:D
I like this coffee cake to. Of course it looks sweet, but it looks good too!
I actually printed out the recipe a couple of weeks ago and have not made it yet! Yours look really wonderful. This would be lovely with a cup of hot coffee! Thanks for sharing.
I agree...change up the recipe of a clone and it's no longer a clone...lol Looks good though!
That looks so good...that crumb topping and the moist cake!! YUM! I could go for a slice right now!!
Lord Im hungry now!!! I was raised with delightsome crumb cakes from Bakerys of NY. And wow were they ever scrumptious! Im going to try this one. Have you ever tasted Martha Stewarts one..she has a NY CC recipe in her site but I have not tried it yet. I love the Entenmanns one, sadly Entenmanns has left Texas. :-(
This looks delicious!
This is my idea of the perfect cake with the ideal cake to topping ratio. Every once in awhile we all need a little Starbucks treat. How comforting.
Looks amazing. When i will have time gonna try this one :) thanks for sharing.
The crumb looks sumptious and I love simple recipes.
I've never had Starbucks coffee cak, but your picture make me want to try it!
Simply lovely Mary. Great job!
This would be perfect with a nice cappuccino, and now I'll be craving just that combination for the rest of the morning!
This looks perfect! Can't wait to try it!
unless you snuck some tumeric in there, those are some seriously happy yellow yolk making chickens.
I have not made this yet...but it is on my "to do" list
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Mary I signed up to recieve your posting but as of yet I haven't rec'd anythin. What am I doing wrong? any help? Thanks Andi http://thewednesdaybaker.blogspot.com/
This is a seriouly good looking coffee cake Mary. All I need with this sweet cake is a good cup of strong, black coffee!
Have a wonderful day Mary.
I really enjoy a nice coffee cake and this one actually reminds me of a cake my Oma used to make. I will have to add this to my bookmarks. Thanks for sharing :o)
I have never had the pleasure of tasting this cake, but it sure looks good and it definitely is photogenic.
Hi Mary, thanks so much for stopping by and leaving me your lovely comment. I have enjoyed my visit here, so many yummy recipes to try. I've become a follower and I am also going to add you to my blog roll.
I like sweet cakes so big thanks from me :) This looks lovely! I won't be able to say its a Starbucks recipe tho or my husband won't eat it. He's unreasonable that way.
Oh and I would LOVE to see your version of Salt Beef Rundown. They make it with fish here as well, you know. Whole fish tho...head and tail and all!
I have a friend who loves anything from Starbucks. I'll have to try this out on her!
Simple yet delicious. Don't mind having it for my breakfast tomorrow!
Buckets of clemency here. Yes I am a Starbucks fiend and I do like a peice of cake now and again so I am pleased to see this recipe. I also have a Starbucks "clone" on my blog, it's the pumpkin/ginger scones which turned out well but I would cut back on the ginger a tad.
Thanks for sharing!
This looks like the coffee cakes I grew up with.
I just love coffee cake, this looks like a good cake to crumb ratio
I ate that coffee cake a LOT in high school. I wonder if I would still like it today....looks delicious!
another beautiful cake, mary! I have to admit to never having a starbucks coffeecake...I guess the chocolaty stuff always beckoned me more! ha ha
Dear Mary, I love coffee cake! I an sure I would not think it was too sweet! I am longing for a good piece of coffee cake. Have a wonderful day. Blessings, Catherine xo
No need to evuh apologize to me for something sweet, Mary! Oh, my! That looks so good. I haven't tried their coffee cake (I usually get their vanilla scones), but this looks divine. I always think of my mother and grandmother when I think of coffee cake because they loved it and both could bake a pretty mean one, but yours... oh, yours looks killer good to me!
See you when I return from squiring my British friends around Florida.
Have a wonderful weekend!
XO,
Sheila :-)
Look perfect Mary and delicious! We were in Starbucks today with my daugther! I love this! gloria
This recipe looks exactly like one I used to make as a kid. Thanks for the good memory :) Warm Wishes!
mamma mia deve essere buonissimo! complimenti come sempre!!!!
Starbaucks has some really good desserts! But I don't think I've ever tasted the coffee cake. They have mini- red velver cakes bites now, and cake poppers on sticks.
As my mother liked to say "strong coffee will cut the sweet taste". I'm thinking strong coffee right now.
Best,
Bonnie
Thanks for the link to the restaurant recipe site. I'm looking forward to checking it out!
I always reduce sugar in recipes - love sweet but not cloying. Have never had a Starbucks pastry. This does looks pretty tasty and so am wondering about my choice.
Wow, such a scrumptious cake! This looks fantastic!
It looks so moist and yummy!!
As long as it come with a Starbucks coffee (tall no foam latte, for me) . . . then I am all in. Or you can just meet me at Starbucks and give your kitchen a break.
Fondly,
Glenda
looks really beautiful mary :)
that struesel topping looks amazing!
I love the bright yellow look of this cake and the toppings! Absolutely yummy!
Mmmmmm I LOVE Starbucks! Looks delicious Mary : )
Oh my gosh. I worked at Starbucks one summer, and we would take home any food that would be "expiring" that day. I was always so excited when this was left over!
The cake looks so moist and the topping so yummy! Mmmmmm!
I have never had the Starbucks Coffee Cake. It sure looks delicious and probably goes perfectly with a cup of coffee.
hmm wish I had a piece with my coffee today! Did you plan on doing corn and edamame succotash two years in a row?!
have a nice weekend!
I don't eat much in the way of cakes and pastries, but if I do, it has to be sweet and decadent to make it worth doing. This one looks to fit the bill! Thanks Mary :)
It's all about the topping, Mary... Lovely cake... now how about the recipe for those maple scones>>???
Hi Mary thank you for getting back with me. Excited to be getting your post. Just this afternoon I got a request for your post. So I should be ok, I had put my e-mail in last Sunday and never got anything. So I should be ok. Will wait for your next post. You are a wonderful cook, your pics are very nice. Andi
Well, did you mention Starbuck! Guess, I prefer homemade ones. Simply adore the top coffee crust. Yummm..... Thanks for sharing it.
